Map of Finland with Nuuksio National Park

Nuuksio National Park (Noux in Swedish), one of the 35 national parks in Finland is situated just outside Helsinki. It has an area of 45 sq km (roughly 17 sq mi) and was established in 1994. Nuuksio is the most ecologically important continuous backwoods area in Southern Finland and several near threatened or endangered species of animals, plants and fungi live in the lake uplands including the European Nightjar, the Siberian Flying Squirrel and the Woodlark. Bears, wolves, lynx and elks also inhabit the area but your chances of ever seeing them are virtually nil.

Hardwood forest

There are well-marked hiking trails and free campsites. The campsites are pretty basic but have clean toilets and firewood available. You should boil lake water before drinking; at least that is the official advice.
