The five million inhabitants of Singapore are packed within a 700 square kilometres area. As an exception to almost all big cities in the world there is exemplary order and safety in Singapore. Walking against red light or even throwing litter on the street may cause a fine of hundreds of dollars. No wonder then that Singapore is the probably the tidiest city in the world.

Skyscrapers
Singapore is a mixture of ultra modern sky-scrapers and atmosphere from bygone times. We stayed in a shabby hostel in the Indian quarter. From there it was only a 15 minutes walk to Orchard Road full of ultra expensive brand shops and fancy restaurants. However, even backpackers should check out the sales on Orchard Road. The prices of fashion articles are sometimes slashed by as much as 80% after Christmas.
The Singapore Zoo is world famous and there is plenty to see for a whole day. There are many air-conditioned buildings in the zoo for hot days. The Sentosa fun-island is worth visiting. From the aerial cableway you have a wonderful view of the harbour. Also remember that the only place in the world to enjoy an authentic Singapore Sling drink is the Raffles Hotel.
