Good maps and guidebooks are some of the most important equipment for an independent traveler. An up-to date and detailed guide book saves not only time but also money and trouble at the destination.
The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet
book series are very detailed and of exceptional value. We use them on all our trips. The LP is called the independent traveler’s bible for a good reason. In both series you find detailed information even about small villages, where only the most eager travelers venture.
Much lighter reading is offered by the Insight Guide and Dorling Kinderley
guide books. They have, however, graphic maps and lots of descriptions about the most important sights along with plenty of nice pictures and schemes.
For a real adventure trip we would choose LP or RG or both and of course the newest edition. For a package trip or just a couple of days’ visit an IG or DK-series book is more than enough.
There are plenty of high standard map series, e.g. the Periplus and Lonely Planet maps.
We buy all our travel guidebooks etc at Amazon on-line book shop. The prices including the delivery fee have always been considerably cheaper than the normal price in bookshops where we live.
It is advisable to order all the books you need at the same time to save money on shipping & handling. Also allow some time for delivery.
