The Pinar del Río province is in the western tip of the island of Cuba. It is a rural area which relies heavily on tobacco farming and is characterized by its' steep sided karst hills, mogotes, and beautiful green valleys. Here are some pictures I took when we visited Pinar del Rio in January 2007.

Oxen are still used for farm field work

Our friendly driver checking the coordinates

We had never seen a banana flower before...

A shop in Pinar del Rio - not much on offer...

Same goes for this cafeteria

But we bought some refreshing fruit juice from this vendor...

... and delicious fresh bananas from this gentleman

A perfect way to spend an afternoon

These little girls had just been performing in a school play

It is surprising to find a Freemasons' temple in
a small Cuban village

A lighthouse on Cayo Jutias

So so cool... Too bad the beach restaurant
at Cayo Jutias
had been swept away by a hurricane

... which also destroyed this forest

As always in Cuba, Fidel posters are everywhere
