The Vysoké Tatry or the High Tatras is a relatively small mountain range on the border of Slovakia and Poland. The logical stepping point to the Tatras is the town of Poprad. It can be reached by train from Kosice in the east of Slovakia or from the capital Bratislava in the west. Poprad also has a small international airport.
From Poprad you take the mountain train, about 30 minutes, to the small villages in the Tatras. Most hikers like to stay in Novy Smokovec, Stary Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica for easy access to the mountains.
The hiking routes vary from mildly challenging to the very difficult and dangerous. With the right preparation, equipment and maybe a local guide it is even possible for the adventurous traveler to hike all the way to Poland. This requires crossing a glacier, so it is only for die-hards.
