Oahu is the administrative centre of Hawaii and Honolulu is the capital city of the state. On the island you find the Pearl Harbour naval base and the world famous Waikiki Beach, which is in the centre of Waikiki. Waikiki Beach is one of the world's easiest places to try surfing because of the long and shallow "symmetric" waves. It is easy to hire a veteran surfer as a teacher for half a day at a time, if you wish. On the opposite shore -North Shore- you can watch the surfing professionals in the huge waves doing their tricks without fearing death.
As the most part of the Hawaiians live On Oahu and particularly in Honolulu, there is a rather busy nightlife. It pays off to gather brochures from the stands and cut off coupons offering free attendance and free welcome drinks if you are planning to do a bar round.
Oahu is the only Hawaiian island where you do not necessarily need a rental car in order to thoroughly get around and explore the island. There is a good and affordable bus traffic network. You also find affordable accommodation more easily than on the other islands.
