Macau, with it’s half a million inhabitants, is situated 65 km west of Hong Kong. Its culture is an interesting mixture of Chinese and Portuguese influence, old and new. In the town there are still many buildings from the Portuguese colonial era. Macau returned to Chinese control in 1999. At the same time, the Chinese government promised not to interfere with Macau's economic or social life for 50 years.

Hotel Lisboa
It is easy to go on a day trip to Macau from Hong Kong. The journey takes 2-3 hours by catamaran. The town area is quite small and it is possible to do the sightseeing on foot. Also the bus service is good and cheap taxis are plentiful.
The best sights include the super stylish Hotel Lisboa and Macau’s many casinos, where Chinese businessmen play baccarat, blackjack, roulette and many other games with substantial amounts of money. You can enter the casinos without paying and there is no need to gamble if you don't want to. You can just enjoy the bars, restaurants and the free shows.

View of a huge casino from Fortaleza do Monte
Fortaleza do Monte castle is also an interesting spot, not least because of its views. There is a history museum on the site as well.

Macau is a good place to go shopping. Alcohol and tobacco are very cheap. People interested in antiques, genuine or (mostly?) fake, can easily spend a whole day around the Rua des Estalgen area.
The most interesting pastime in Macau is however to observe everyday life. After the chaotic energy of Hong Kong the calm and relaxed atmosphere of Macau feels almost surreal in a strange way.
