Cairns is situated on the east coast of Queensland. It is a very popular vacation destination with the aussies because of its good climate, beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. In Cairns you can also spend an active vacation and go paddling, horseback riding, playing tennis or golf or doing many other sports like white water rafting.
One of the most popular sights is the Kuranda museum railway which crosses stunning landscapes and ends in the middle of a (sub) tropical rain forest.

Train to Kuranda

Excursions to the Australian inland are arranged and on those you can see an old copper mine, stalactite caves and even thousands of years old rock paintings made by the aboriginals.

Trimaran to the Great Barrier Reef
Cairns is also the perfect take-off point for the Great Barrier Reef with its crystal clear waters full of marine life, making it arguably the best diving place in the world.
Downsides of Cairns are relatively high prices for backpackers and too many tourists in the high season (for our liking, anyway).
